Today, December 22, 2011, is the Winter Solstice.

The December solstice occurs when the sun reaches its most southerly declination of -23.5 degrees. In other words, it is when the North Pole is tilted 23.5 degrees away from the sun.

In Concord, NH, where I work, there will be this much daylight – 8 hours, 58 minutes, 43 seconds. I’m thrilled that we will begin to have more daylight each day.  So even though this is the start of winter, there will be more light.
